COMPANION & SOCIAL PROGRAM

Dear PVSC 49 Companions and Attendees,

I am excited to welcome you to the wonderful city of Philadelphia, known as the "The City of Brotherly Love," as we convene for the first in-person PVSC conference in two years.   It's a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones, while touring the city and surrounding areas. Philadelphia has so many fabulous attractions, history, art, architecture and a vibrant and diverse food scene.

Our Social Program will take us to tour the city; see historical landmarks; visit the Magic Gardens - a unique mosaic garden; learn why Philadelphia has been called the "City of Murals" while viewing a selection on a walking tour; visit the spectacular and world renowned Longwood Gardens; and view the modern masters at the Barnes Foundation.   As a local, I've planned an exciting introduction to these sights in the PVSC Social and Companion program. It would be lovely to have you join us in exploring and enjoying this fantastic city.

I hope you'll accompany us on tours in and around the city and see just how much Philadelphia has to offer – history, art, gardens and so much more.  Be sure to register early as seats on the tours will be limited.  Please check this page again in the future for updates.

I look forward to meeting you in Philadelphia!

Judy Schneider
Companion and Social Program Chair

Companion Tour #1 - Philadelphia Murals Walking Tour (10:00 AM - 12:00 PM)

Philadelphia’s “Mural Arts” program has evolved into the world’s largest collection of outdoor public art. This tour will introduce you to some of these murals as you learn about the artists, the artistic process and the history of the diverse communities that serve as the backdrop for this unique art form.

The mural program began in 1984 as a component of the city’s Anti-Graffiti Network, an effort to eradicate the graffiti crisis plaguing the city. They hired muralist Jane Golden to reach out to graffiti writers and to redirect their energies from destructive graffiti writing to constructive mural painting. And the rest is history.

The Barnes Foundation was established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture." The foundation holds one of the world’s finest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist and early modern paintings. This includes extensive works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, and Giorgio de Chirico. It also includes works by American masters Charles Demuth, William Glackens, and Maurice Prendergast.

We will make the mile walk together. At the Foundation we will take an hour guided tour of the collection. Participants will then have time to explore the collection and/or enjoy lunch at the foundation on their own, before departing back to the hotel.
