Hello my name is PJ Walters and it is enjoyable to be part of such a vibrant and talented community of scientists and their families. Thank you, Angele for allowing me the opportunity to participate this year as the Companion’s Social Program Coordinator. As a native to the DC area I am especially honored to welcome the 44th PVSC to the Nation’s Capitol and…“The DMV” ~ The District, Maryland & Virginia~ are the focus with each tour highlighting virtues distinct to that area. The intention is to leave you with a memorable experience of each region, and to give you a sense of what makes the Washington DC Metropolitan area diverse and uniquely connected.

Companion Breakfast (7:00 - 8:30 AM)
Join us for a continental breakfast before starting out your day. This is a great place to meet other companions at the conference. This will also be the gathering spot for the daily tour. This event is included with Companion Registration.
Companion Tour #1: Washington DC City Monuments Tour (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
To begin the week we will get acquainted with the National Mall by offering a monuments bus tour of the city. The monuments are a keystone of our Nations Capitol that exemplify the people and events that have helped shape and make our country what it is today. By the end of the tour you will have plenty of inspiration and information to be able to explore DC on your own.

Companion Tour 2: Virginia Excursion (includes lunch) (9:00 AM - 3:30 PM)
We will visit the plantation estate Mount Vernon, home of America’s first President George Washington. Lucky for us, one of the most celebrated National Historic Landmarks is so close by, located in Alexandria, Virginia. Mount Vernon is a beautiful property with breathtaking views.
After our visit we will enjoy a hearty sit down group lunch @ Blackwall Hitch with unparalleled views of the Potomac River and National Harbor.
After lunch, you are encouraged to explore Old Town, Alexandria on your own with a walk along the Potomac River or find the perfect souvenir in one of the quaint boutique shops along King Street.

Companion Tour 3: Maryland Excursion (includes lunch) (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)
This daytrip starts on board our luxury motor coach lead by an expert tour guide with our sites set on Maryland! We will exit the city by following the escape route made famous by John Wilkes Booth, the man who shot and killed the 16th American President, Abraham Lincoln.
This is one of the most intriguing stories to ever be told in American history. Find out what happened to Booth after he narrowly escaped from his crimes in the balcony at Ford’s Theater.
The first stop…Clinton, Maryland and the Surratt House Museum
Mary Surratt, John Wilkes Booth and others were accused of using this establishment as a headquarters for meetings to conspire against the President. Here, we will continue the story and enjoy a guided tour of the Surratt house by knowledgeable docents.
Second stop…Waldorf, Maryland and the Dr. Mudd House Museum
We continue our historic journey with a visit to the Dr. Mudd House Museum. We will learn of Dr. Mudd’s misfortune of having been called on to administer medical attention to the fugitive.
Next stop…Crab Feast and lunch buffet @The Point, Brooms Island, MD
From the Dr. Mudd House Museum, we will weave our way through the majestic Maryland countryside, arriving at one of Southern Maryland’s premier destinations to enjoy a local cultural favorite, the traditional crab feast. Feel like a true MD native enjoying MD blue crabs surround by the picturesque Patuxent River.
