Abstract
Proton and electron Relative Damage Coefficient (RDC) curves were generated for p-PERC silicon solar cells by organizing degradation data from four radiation facilities. Proton irradiation was performed for energies of 0.1, 2, 4, and 10 MeV and electron irradiation was performed for energies of 0.7, 1, 2, 8, and 20 MeV. Our results show that the proton RDC curves for p-PERC silicon solar cells depart significantly from silicon solar RDC curves published in The Solar Cell Radiation Handbook by NASA JPL. These findings underscore the need to reassess silicon radiation tolerance for emerging low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations where cost-effective, modern PERC cells are gaining relevancy.
