Abstract

The rapid growth of distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems poses operational and power quality challenges for distribution networks. Hosting capacity (HC) studies are therefore required to quantify the maximum PV integration without violating network limits. This study evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of two strategies to increase HC and achieve 100 % PV penetration. The first strategy integrates residential battery energy storage systems (RBESS) with the Volt–VAR function in smart inverters, while the second relies on network reinforcement through transformer upgrades and voltage regulation devices. Time-series simulations are performed in OpenDSS and MATLAB to assess voltage and thermal constraints. Results compare the cost and effectiveness of both alternatives, providing practical guidance for maximizing HC while maintaining reliable and economical operation.
