Abstract

Snow losses can significantly reduce photovoltaic (PV) energy production in cold climates but are difficult to predict accurately. This study compared measured PV performance from multiple GroundWork Renewables, Inc. soiling measurement stations with snow losses modeled using the Marion and Townsend methodologies to evaluate the accuracy of the Marion and Townsend models. Both models capture the primary structural characteristics of snow losses, while exhibiting variation consistent with the inherent complexity and variability of snow processes. The results validate a practical modeling approach suitable for general purpose, site-specific snow loss assessments.
