Abstract

We model the spatially aggregated power generation of a 50-MW solar PV power plant using the Wavelet Variability Model (WVM), and measured data from a single weather monitoring station.  The required cloud speed for the model can be derived from either ground measured electric current for PV tracker rows distributed across the site, or from ERA5 pressure level data. Compared to modeled power not accounting for the spatial smoothing effects of cloud movements, the WVM significantly reduces modeling error and produces a more realistic ramp rate distribution, with concomitant economic benefits.
